Your patients that struggle with obesity also struggle with a whole host of other problems that are either the cause or the result of their weight problems.
As a medical doctor, treating and controlling co-morbidities like Type 2 diabetes or CHD can fall higher on the priority list than treating and controlling your patient's weight. After all, these diseases can steal your patient's life before they have the opportunity to lose weight, so they need to be the immediate concern. However, you know that if your patient could lose even 5-10% of their weight, their health would improve significantly. But, so many of your obese patients struggle to adhere to the nutrition or movement advice you provide. What else can you do?
As a mental health professional, you are well aware that most of your obese clients struggle with their weight as a result of past trauma such as abuse, loss of a loved one, or painful life changes. As you work diligently to help your patients work through their trauma, bouts of depression from their continued struggles with their weight cause regressions from their progress. You know their weight struggles stem from the trauma, so that needs to remain the focus of your session. How can you help your patient maintain their forward momentum overcoming their trauma without their weight acting as a distraction?
As a Dietitian, you know exactly what changes your obese patients should make to lose weight and improve their health. You have offered a variety of approaches that have had a modicum of success, but with each approach, your patient experiences a few weeks of success before falling back into old habits. One week a social event derails them, another, they succumb to a binge. With each regression, your patient becomes frustrated and starts losing faith they can succeed. How do you help your patient achieve success when adherence is the biggest issue, not knowledge?
The Monarch Effect offers the answer to each of these questions. My programs focus on helping your obese patients from all of the angles you don't have time to hit. My Love Yourself Lean online emotional eating program helps those patients that struggle to lose weight because at their root, they don't love themselves. They don't believe they are worthy or capable of achieving their desires. They typically struggle with emotion or stress-driven binges.
Through my Love Yourself Lean program, your patient will lean a new way of thinking, feeling, eating and being that will teach them to love themselves so they can heal their relationship with food and finally lose weight and keep it off. If your patients struggle with perfectionism, black and white thinking, self-disgust or even self-hatred, bingeing, shame, and negative self-talk, my Love Yourself Lean program will be a fantastic tool to help them get into a healthy mindset for weight loss. In addition to my Love Yourself Lean program, I also work with patients one-on-one to establish new eating and movement patterns that foster weight loss and improved health. As a certified Weight Management and Behavior Change specialist, I use a combination of cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing to help clients identify what they are and are not willing to change and then create action plans around those decisions. I think it is extremely important to meet the client where they are without judgment. If the client is simply willing to walk to the mailbox and back each day, then that is a great starting point. If they are currently unwilling to increase their vegetable intake but are willing to reduce their portion sizes, then that is a great start. I help patients determine what realistic changes they are willing to make and hold them accountable to upholding those. As they achieve small successes, their willingness to change expands and larger successes are experienced.
